Google Acquires Motorola : The Sucker Punch

It has been just few minutes since the news has been broken that Google has decided to acquire Motorola Mobility for 12.5 Billion $.

Why this acquisation makes so much sense ?

1) Motorola Mobility has 24500 patents awarded and pending. Such a huge patent portfolio and mainly related to telecommunication and phones will help Google defend its turf and protect Android OEM‘s from patent litigations by the cabal of Apple , Microsoft , Sony and RIM. Read the press declaration when Motorola Mobility was found as an independent company which tells this patent count here

2) Motorola Mobility has some very very crucial patents which can help Google take aim at Microsoft X-Box. Microsoft has already sued Motorola ( you are reading right, keep reading) for overcharging royalties for Motorola’s system critical patents being used by it in X-BOX.  Everyone saw how HTC was paying Microsoft $15 for every Android handset hold but Motorola was not. Such is the strength of these X box related patents. Read more about them here  and here

3) Google can now address the issue of fragmentation in the Android market by providing the much needed base standard phones for the app developers.

4) Motorola has a huge sales network and has experience in producing low cost phones. Google can leverage this and enter the low cost phone market to enter the market  territory still uncharted. This factor is being discounted by many but Google knows the real market lies in the sub 100$ phones which are used in Asia , Latin America and Africa. Google has got a brand new solid vehicle to enter these markets.

5)  Google can now control the end to end user experience for Android and prove the capabilities of Android to be the genuine iOS competitor. The kind of commitment from Google would ensure other OEM that Google is really serious about Android and would not leave them hanging in between. As Google guys have promised, Android will continue to be open and all partner OEM will be able a new realm of user experience.

6) In line with Google announcements in Google I/O about having Android on all household devices, Motorola experience will be invaluable input. Motorola has strong history of communication devices and can help Google kick start the process without waiting for partners to match Google’s agility and pace.

7) Motorola having deep interests in set-top boxes and modems is a perfect fit for the sagging Google TV venture which has left Logitech bleeding badly. Google realizes in order to make Google TV success it has to come to the field itself.  Providing content and software is not enough to take on the competitors in the TV space

Why other OEM don’t need to worry about this acquisition ?

1. Samsung, HTC and Acer have a lot of investment done in the Android ecosystem. All of them might chose to work with Windows 7 platform as well but there doesn’t seem to

2. Now Google is more equipped to safegaurd their Android Vendors against patent lawsuits and ensure all the OEM that their interests will be protected.

3. Google doesn’t gain anything by alienating their Android partners else they all might move to be Windows only OEM like Nokia. The more partners they have more markets Google has for its core businesses. Google has more interest in keeping the vendors on board Android lest the party be spoiled.

Nokia – Plan B : The Other Side

Accenture, a global management consulting, technology services and outsourcing company with more than 215,000 employees serving clients in more than 120 countries, will be taking on approximately 3,000 Nokia employees to support the continued delivery of Symbian software development and support services. The collaboration also includes plans for Accenture to provide mobility software, business and operational services around the Windows Phone platform to Nokia and other ecosystem participants. Source

Looks like it is a very good plan B by Steven Elop, the same guy who was castigated by millions of Nokia fans. People called him from Trojan Horse of Microsoft to the biggest disaster that could have happened to Nokia. This is our view of what possibly the Plan B Nokia has and IT IS NOT ENDORSED BY NOKIA.

Some facts and possible scenarios which will make clear by PLAN B

Facts

1) Nokia unable to carry forward Symbian development activities of Symbian due to several factors like organization culture, rising employee costs, etc ,etc

2) Nokia lets Accenture do the software development which is well versed with handling software development and support at low costs

3)  Nokia already has agreed to start shipping Microsoft Windows phone coming 2012

4) Nokia current R & D and Symbian development is still working. Unlike a dying product the code base is still being maintained and worked upon actively.

PLAN B – What if Windows 7 and Nokia marriage hits the rocks in 2013 ?

1) Accenture will be already keeping the Symbian software development running. The Nokia Accenture partnership doesn’t say that Symbian development will be stopped.

2) Nokia has kept the developers of Symbian on board by giving them free E7 and Windows 7 phones. Source

3) Nokia already has got and will get further several billion of dollars of Microsoft. All these dollars help it fund the research and development it needs to do to counter the Korean and Taiwanese in addition to the BIG APPLE !

5) Most important,  NOKIA HAS SIGNED NO AGREEMENT OR CONTRACT THAT SAYS IT HAS TO STOP PRODUCING SYMBIAN PHONES. They have said it from their own side that last Symbian phones will be shipped in 2012-2013. So legally none can stop them from selling Symbian phones if they really want to :)

6) In 2013 Nokia can/may just announce that owing to heightened consumer and developer interest,   changed market realities, and new killer products in pipelines – they will still bet their dollar on Symbian.   They might provide a conversion tool for converting Windows Phone apps to Symbian apps and vice versa just like Microsoft did do for I-phone Apps. Also there are

So Nokia just might have chosen to play the smart kid on the block.

UPDATE 28 May – Nokia announced they will keep supporting Symbian till 2016 ;) , see my prediction coming true   CNET Report

Why is Google afraid of Facebook

Premise: Google feeling increasingly threatened by Facebook which has just been claiming to have 500 million users

Why is , if at all Google afraid  ?

Facebook has already moved in to the areas of

1. Advertisements – Directly hitting Google where it shall hurt most. Google still has over 90% of his revenue in the form of ads.

2. Docs – Though not a core business for Google but still infuriating, especially with open Microsoft backing to FB.

3. Facebook Credits – Hitting the Google checkout and PayPal.

4. Social Networking- Google is already loosing the grip orkut had in the few markets to Facebook.

Areas it is trying to establish itself

1.Marketplace – Directly hitting out at e-bay and amazon

2. Facebook Answers – Directly hitting yahoo answers and google answers.

It is here where there is bigger danger for Google lies. If people start getting answers to their problems from their networks then first casualty will be Google’s search business. Moreover being actively backed by Bing , Facebook can dent Google core business even harder. If search goes down so will advertisement revenue and maybe Google itself.

THE BIGGEST QUESTION IS CAN GOOGLE FIGHT BACK OR IT WILL BECOME VICTIM OF ITS OWN SUCCESS
