How to get products into Singapore from USA

Hi Friends,

This is just a small how to guide on how to get stuff from USA or other countries into Singapore !!

Step 1: Create an account on http://www.vpost.com.sg.   This is a subsidiary of Sing Post, the government company managing the postal operations in Singapore. So don’t worry , it is not a fly by night operator. Your money and products both are safe

Step 2:  Once you create your login Id, VPOST will give you a US address which will look something like this -

Name  ******* Varun Mittal
Address 1  17230 NE Sacramento Street
Address 2  Suite *******
City  Portland
State  Oregon
Zip Code  97230
Tel  (503) 736 5916

Step 3:  Buy whatever you want from USA, any on line retailer – Amazon , Barnes and Nobles, Ebay …anything which is legal to buy and import in Singapore. While you are buying put the virtual address you got in the shipping address place.

PS: Remember if you buy anything with invoice >400 SGD , you have to pay duty. Any purchase up to 400 SGD is not taxed in Singapore.

Step 4: Once you have done your purchase, send the invoice to invusa@vpost.com.sg with the following details -

  • Your VP Number and Full Name
  • Details of purchased products
  • Total amount of your purchase
  • Name & address of Merchant/Seller
(Important if you are purchasing from an individual seller from ebay or Amazon)
  • Tracking number from merchant’s warehouse to your vPOST address
Step 5: Now you are done. Once your goods have been brought to Singapore, you will be notified via email. Those who are restless may check the status by logging into VPOST.
Step  6: Now is the MASTER STROKE time :)  You have to pay for the shipping once goods have reached Singapore. You are not aware of the shipping charges till now and now you see them …. Too high ..Don’t Worry DEAL SHARK is here :)
VPOST has several different schemes for different card owners , so check which card got what scheme at that time before you pay. By using the right card ( your own or that of  your friends)  you can get a killer deal. I got my Kindle shipped for 60 CENTS. Their are plenty of offers on most cards, and if you don’t find one you know who to contact !!!
Note 1 : The process is same for all countries served by VPOST – Japan, Europe, China
Note 2:  There are several other companies offering such services but VPOST is the recommendation of this oniomaniac. You guys are free to try other services and share your feedback ..

India’s hangover of Socialism

In the aftermath of global economy crisis Indian economists and policymakers were showing off how their models and policies were successful and prevented India from going into the recession.

India survived the first wave of economic downturn because for several other factors in addition to socialist economic policies. Without taking the credit away from policy makers it was the Indian habit of saving and investing in assets. Unlike a lot of Americans, most Indians generally don’t live on credit all through lives. After the collapse of Soviet Union and the American model of capitalism whole world has realized that in order to be successful they need to follow a combination of both. A state supported and guided socially relevant capitalism. A system where free market forces promote innovation but government is active enough to prevent exploitation of people.

There are different frontiers to witness the hangover bleeding India.

Our honorable UPA government launching guaranteed employment schemes.  It is a good initiative but issue is what kind of work are people doing in these jobs. They are building infrastructure projects with human labor which doesn’t stand the test of even monsoon rains leave aside their long term reliability. To add to it is the corruption through this scheme by various government departments on an unprecedented scale.

The government is waiving of farm loans. It is all like making people dependent on government . As a result even those who would have paid back have decided not to pay back. The money which should have been  invested in projects to empower the farmers is being used to buy votes.

What a mockery of social welfare !!

The PSU’s are the vital strand of umbilical cord of socialism Lets see them sector wise…

Indian Airline or Air India or whatyever they are called now post merger is a glaring example of government’s insistence and bureaucratic mismanagement . A once profitable company is reeling under unbearable burden of losses leading it to a stage of seeking bailout.

BSNL and MTNL the telecom companies once having monopolies in their markets are now relegated to fourth or even lower ranks in their respective areas of operations.

The companies are still run the socialist way with rigid hiring and union rules. They have too rigid procedures for acquisations , buying purchases. The PSU’s still have social obligations  imposed on them without any support in return for them. They are left to fight while being handcuffed.

I hope someone can find an aspirin for this hangover…
