Khap Panchayat – Hangover of the past

All these months we have been hearing about the Khap Panchayats issuing the orders and authorising killings against couples indulging in marriages in same Gotra.  This has lead to several honour killings all around and in the National capital territory.  They have mixed up science and their prejudices and so continue to stay in the hangover.

What are khap panchayats?

These are community groups — usually comprising elderly men from the Jat community — that set the rules in an area comprising one or more villages. Transgressors’ penalty can be serious.

What do they want?

An amendment to the Hindu Marriage Act, 1955, to ban marriages within the same gotra (sub-caste) including mother’s gotra and within the same village. Local customs dictate that a boy and a girl belonging to the same gotra are brother and sister.

How old is this institution?

The exact origins of khap panchayats are lost in the mists of time but popular belief dates this social structure back to 600 AD.

Scientific explanation to why marriage in same gotra can be dangerous

The root of this lies in the origin of caste system in India. Earlier people of same caste , lets say potters would be living together and specializing in their trade.  As the system continues to gain root it became more hereditary. In the earlier times whole villages used to very closely linked in term of their genetic origin. So as illustrated in the reference Hemophilia in the Royal Family , if the family has some genes related to specific diseases then their is a higher probability of the offspring getting the same disease. The basic logic to prohibit marriage in the same sub caste was correct. In the current times this logic can not be applied blindly since the social organization and medical science have undergone sea change.

Now the villages and sub-castes are too scattered and the logic of passing on of the disease is not as applicable.  The elders of Hindu communities like Jats are not ready to understand the realities of current times and still obsessed with the past. The politicians as always are more than happy fanning the FIRE for their petty vote bank politics.

What can be done to address the real issues and prevent the jungle-raj of Khap Panchayat ?

In the event of a couple insisting on marrying someone from theri own sub caste, they be explained the risks involved as per the medical science findings. If there are some tests which can be conducted to prove or rule out the risk to offspring , they be conducted and the result be known to both girl and guy. Anyone enforcing their wills on the prospective guy and groom must be punished in the most severe possible ways. What we need is upholding of rights of people and warning them of any dangers they can cause to their children in future by their actions. Also the insurance companies may chose to raise the premium for those people. But killing them is not at all a solution and must be stopped at all costs.

Excerpts -

“It takes two people with the same recessive gene problem to have a child with that disease, marrying within your own family increases the odds of that happening. Though there are greater risks when you marry a close relative, it’s certainly no guarantee that children will be born with any birth defects or disease. The risks increase as this happens more and more each generation, though.”

Forgotten children of Islam and Christianity

This post is a follow up post for my previous post India land of diversities and hypocrisies which evoked some responses I would like to reply to. I have used the various sites for research in my article and some segments of my text have been sourced from them. Names of all of them are present in the reference section. I have taken care to only take neutral or Muslim resources as reference so that my Muslims brothers don’t accuse me of using one sided data.

It is known fact that caste/birth based inequalities do exist in Hinduism. Government has provided caste based reservations  to uplift their status. Recently there have been demands from Christian and Muslim Dalits to be included in the SC/ST/OBC categories citing they also faced some discrimination and economic inequalities like the Hindu Dalits. I don’t disagree with them since almost all of them are Hindus which converted to Islam or Christianity because of their personal reasons. Though one of them was probably that they were promised freedom from those inequalities but I don’t get into that now. They converted, their decision.

What pushed me to write this piece were  comments by a Muslim reader, denying all of this and condemning Hinduism for having caste inequalities. I have problem with any discrimination in any religion in any part of world because of BIRTH. I am a Hindu and I accept that there were injustice done to some people in past. These people need be brought into mainstream. Though I don’t agree with the methods being adopted, but that is a separate issue.

I remember a quote by a Muslim speaker which I suddenly find even more true – ” Those following 340 million gods are divided amongst themselves( reference to Hindus), but why are we Muslims still divided when we all follow only 1 God”.

The irony as I see is as follows -

My friend Amir was totally correct in saying that there is no concept of CASTE in ISLAM. I can’t agree more.  But hey ! why  are then the Muslims in India asking caste based reservation ???

If they are Muslims , then they can’t be dalits because as per Quran, there is no concept of Dalit.

As I see the issue is that , Muslims have to realize that under these circumstances we need to see the context. They have to accept that they also have BIRTH/ CASTE based inequalities instead of constantly denying them and any attempts at talking about them as ATTACK ON ISLAM.

Brother it is our so called Muslim and Christian Dalits who have said on record [ see references] that their politicians and rich don’t care for them and have led to this state of theirs. They want the  Constitutional Order of 1950 Para 3, which says Muslims can’t be SC repealed.

Quran and Bible say there are no caste in Muslims/Christians, Rich and upper caste Muslims and Christians [ since there are lower castes, so logically others are upper otherwise there is no lower] say there is no caste based inequality, Lower castes/Dalits in Islam and Christianity say there are caste based inequalities.

The evangelists of both religions promised the MOON to the followers but failed to keep up their promises.  So I hope that they realize this and since none of the scripture can be amended to included the caste concept [ I personally don't agree with the concept too] , they accept the reality to fix the rot. Hindus have learnt it the hard way to accept that there are some practices from past which must not continue in FUTURE. Sati is one example. Hope they learn by experience and help those lower castes and stop shunning away from realities.

I reiterate, I don’t support any caste based reservation for followers of any religion. I wish the Muslims and Christian leaders came forward to help those who need them rather than becoming PUPPETS in the hands of vote bank politicians.

PS: Also repealing the above mentioned section of constitution is not a SOLUTION as it will trigger demands of an uncomfortable UNIFORM CIVIL CODE being brought which All India Muslim Personal Law Board so despises. It is simple logic if you want same rights for Muslim Dalits then there must be same laws for Muslims. It can’t work this way you get same rights and different laws. The solution has to come from inside the community , rather than constitutional amendments.

India land of diversities and hypocrisies

These were two news items I read last week and I was deeply pained after reading these ….
A painfully regular fixture of Malayalam dailies is the news of ‘familysuicides’ – a euphemism for parents poisoning their kids to death and taking their own lives – owing to debt burden. Debt statistics for the state suggest that if the state government were a family, it would think of something equally drastic, too.Kerala’s overall debt, comprising internal debt, small savings and provident fund, and loans and advances from the centre have ballooned fiercely, from Rs 20,176 crore in 1999-2000 , to Rs 41,878 crore in 2004-05 , and to Rs 70,969 crore in 2009-10 . And that, for a state with a population of roughly 3.4 crore. The budget estimates for 2010-11 put that debt figure at a more anxiety-invoking level of Rs 78,329 crore.

Kozhikode in Kerala will soon have India’s largest mosque where 25,000-30,000 devotees can pray at a time. Estimated to be built at Rs 40 crores, the structure measuring 2.5 lakh square feet will push Delhi’s Jama Masjid to a distant second when it takes shape.
On one hand  there is abject poverty and the finances of a state are in shambles. On the other hand we have the state having so much money that they want to make India’s biggest mosque.
I felt some questions while I was reading them -
1) Why can’t there be proper use of  wealth and money in the land of poverty and hunger.  The money spent to make this mosque could have been utilized to provide education and training to so many people. These people could have then used it to gain and generate further employment.
2) What are the government doing to resolve this imbalance. Is there only responsibility is to divide society on some or the other basis.
3) Does Allah, Ram advocate wasting of so much money when there are so many of their children in such dire needs. What will benefit a poor family more – a grand place of worship or a hospital and school.
I don’t know when people will understand this that no god wants you to build edifices for them. All they want is to be caring and benevolent for your people.

Appeasement Unabated

It seemed to me as if British Raj had returned to India when I saw the news of BJP leaders being DEPORTED from Jammu airport to Punjab. To add to the insult was the incident of Congress government in Maharastra reversing the direction of train going to Jammu to prevent BJP workers from reaching Jammu. I thought India was still a free country —

I have some questions to which I can’t find answers to

1) Those who say Minority sentiments be respected and they be not provoked need to be asked if flying of tricolor a provocation ?

2) For those for whom tricolor is provocation, do they deserve to be called Indians. Do they deserve to be given humongous subsidies for everything and innocent taxpayers of India footing the bill for all their needs since these PROVOKED people have no industries, no self sufficiency in food supplies, etc

3) Those protecting these minorities and ever indulgent in minority appeasement politics need to asked when will they stop licking the footsteps of specific communities in name of secularism

4) Where are those intelligent class of Arundhati Roy, Javed Akhtar, Shabana Azmi who claim to be true secularism champions ? Why no statement from them condemning Congress government preventing BJP from hoisting National Flag in Kashmir. They are not desecrating any mosque like temples are being in Pakistan, they are not killing anyone like the Sikhs were slaughtered in Ganderbal, they are not driving anyone from their homes on gun point like the innocent pandits of Valley ….Why do I or BJP need permission from Italian mummy and spineless prime minister to host Tricolor on my motherland ?

5) What will be the next order from Congress government so committed to appeasement …. You need to take permission from a specific community before entering your temples lest they be PROVOKED. Last time world saw such appeasement it had to face HITLER. I hope the saying “History Repeats Itself ” doesn’t t turn true this time.

I remember Uma Bharati saying this line for Congress – ” Ye sab Napunsak ki tarah khade rehte hain” … India is witnessing height of appeasement under the current government unmindful of the fact that what if the majority got PROVOKED.

6) This is not a threat but a point to ponder for congress, but they have lost lives of  2 prime ministers to the appeasement of specific community or sections of society . How many before BlueStars, Rajiv Gandhi Assassinations, Kashmir Genocide they want before they rise up from slumber

Hope some sense comes in Congress government’s mind and they behave little responsibly. Netaji would be crying from heaven to see the state of country :( :( :(

India still loves everything foreign

Not a single foreigner working in Bollywood has so far applied for citizenship, though some of them are living in India for more than seven years. The biggies include superstar and blockbuster heroine Katrina Kaif who has been living in India and is part of Indian film industry since 2003. Another is famous singer Adnan Sami who still is reluctant of taking Indian citizenship..

I had some questions perturbing me ,  Why even after 60 years of independence -

1) We are afraid of standing for our rights and honor
2) We love to be insulted and abased by everyone without batting an eyelid
3) Our workers have to slog and plead for visas in foreign countries
4) In the name of level playing field and equal opportunities only our interests are sacrificed by our government
5) Those who want to use the country only for earning money and not be proud of the country be allowed to do so freely
6) We are freely doling out visas to people for working inside India
7) We don’t have different tax rates for nationals and foreigners,  which are strong enough to reinforce importance of Indian citizenship

Appeasement unabated after 60 years

After the partition of India and Pakistan, there were huge stretches of properties of land and properties left by Hindus in Pakistan and Muslims in India. Such property was declared as enemy property by both the governments and given to custodian who were government officers. All the property whose owners had emigrated to the other country was declared enemy property. In some cases some family members stayed  in the earlier countries and claimed it back . Some of them are under litigation even now.

Recently government of India let an ordinance vesting control of all such properties under government of India lapse. This ordinance was triggered in wake of Raja Mehmod’s kin  getting properties worth over 3000 crore back from government of India.

Pakistan government has already sold all such properties own by Indians in Pakistan. But Indian government which should compensate those Indians who lost their properties in Pakistan by these properties in busy indulging in vote bank politics. I respect Muslims of India and value their contribution to India. However I am against an sort of appeasement on religious lines. Our government under pressure from some special community groups doesn’t have guts to take such an action. They are hell bent on continuing their 60 year policy of appeasement and divide and rule.  I probably would not mind giving the property to Indian descendants to those Muslims who went to Pakistan but for government taking a decision and then reversing it under pressure  of vote bank politics. I am against appeasement …If the government is so serious about helping people why not use this 3000 Crore of Raja Mahmood property to improve education and implement health welfare schemes . I would be happy even if it is only for some particular section of society.

Dear ManhohanJi, Please don’t divide our country and people again in name of religion for petty political gains :(

Benevolent India

Indian government’s  recent decision to offer 5 million USD to Pakistan for flood relief when several Indian states are reeling under drought and flood has come under heavy criticism from all corners. The Indian wounds of Mumbai have not even heeled completely that we has this salt being rubbed over them. The current government being led by on of the of the greatest economists probably has some Manhomohanomic logic behind this action which is not understandable by my naive mind.

Some of the so called experts say that those areas under floods are being provided relief by terrorist organization like Jaamat-ul-Dawa(JUD). The good for nothing Pakistani administration is unable to take care of  its people and can only cry about non state actors hijacking the peace.  These experts say that JUD will be using these areas as recruitment grounds for its terrorist operations and India by helping Pakistan in Flood relief can neutralize this.

By my understanding it is just like feeding a snake in your home so that it can bite you next day. 1947, 1965, 1971, Punjab, Kashmir, Kargil,Bomb Blasts,…..How much are we expected by our government to tolerate before they say THATS ENOUGH. Does government of India needs to be reminded how many times we made sacrifices ? As the world wakes up India continues to sleep in its tryst with destiny.

Estranged Lovers – USA and China

One is a superpower trying to fix  its tattered and faltering economy and other if the emergent superpower producing almost everything at fraction of cost anyone else can.

They compete with each other, fight with each other on differnt issue but deep down the heart are aware that both need each other.

The bottom line is that China knows the biggest consumption driver is still USA and they hold over 2 trillion in  US treasury bonds. Now China is stuck with those bonds since there is none it can sell them off since so one has enough cash to buy them.

So at least in the near future the love hate relationship will continue.

This is the Cold War 2.0 with different foundations of conflict….History indeed repeats itself !!!

Is regulation relevant in India ?

Since the time of Nehru India was a highly regulated system. Indira strengthened the controls by her Inspector Raj and Licanse Raj. I was thinking and realized one of three most successful sectors in India are the most unregulated ones.

Lets see the sectors which succeeded in India even in the absence of regulations in the post liberalization era-

1) Beauty Pageant
India got Miss Universe and Miss World title by hordes and swarms since Sushmita Sen and Aishwarya Rai won the first titles in post liberalization era. Before 1991 India had only 1 world Pageant winner in Rita Faria in 1960. Beauty Pageant in India were promoted by wife of one of the old industry scion Wadia ( Bombay dyeing, Brittania) . There was no government regulations and bureaucracy involved.  The sector flourished . We got global brand names and so many cine stars like Aishwarya Rai from these pageants.

2) Information Technology

The IT industry was started only after the IT revolution started by Sam Pitroda in late 1980′s. The industry has ensured India becomes a global powerhouse for IT services. The extent of it being that services now contribute more than any other sector to India’s ‘s GDP and exports.   IT and related services are the biggest contributor to this rise of services. By means of providing utilities, food, etc to IT workers jobs were created.

3) Cricket
The cricket administration often criticized to be corrupt and biased and controlled by politicians with vested interests. But lets see the other side of goods  because of absence of bureaucracy

India has the maximum advertisement revenues from cricket in the world. BCCI (Board for Control of Cricket in India) is the richest sporting body in the world. IPL ( Indian Premier League) is the fastest growing sporting league in the world. Its value increased from 0 to 4 billion $ in under three years. Indian cricketers are one of the richest sport persons all over the world…
