Band Baaja Baraat

It was one of the most refreshing films of 2010 from bollywood and embedded in it were enormous management lessons. It looked like a perfect management case study.

Lesson 1 : Importance of partnership

The heroine has a brilliant business idea. She is working with existing wedding planners to learn the trade. Unfortunately she alone is able to start the company. There are too many things to handle  for her alone. Then comes the hero who helps her get an internship with the best incumbent in the town.  Thus she was able to focus on her core competencies.

Lesson 2 : Bet on hungry people

The one on shaking boat can trust the other the other shaking boat. The other one will fight for his survival and that help you stay afloat.

Heroine’s company “Shaadi Mubarak” or SM was new in business and it was them to engage existing suppliers. This was because SM had very low margins and to wean away suppliers of your competitors is not an easy task.  They took a chance by engaging first time suppliers for food and other services.  There was a dialog there from one of the supplier to hero the part owner of SM when he was apprehensive about trusting anew supplier.

” Tumhara bhi to first time hai ” [ It is you first time also]

An entrepreneur and leader needs to take calculated risks. They need to bet on people who they feel will fight because of their hunger to succeed. It it this hunger which can make a team into a WINNING COMBINATION.

Once Upon a Time in Mumbai

This is a recent movie made by Ekta Kapoor’s production house , allegedly based on Haji Mastan‘s life.

There were several important business learning I got from this movie .

1. Leadership change management

A leader when passing on the mantle to the successor temporarily , must be wary of competent but overzealous team members. A lot of time such members in their effort to prove their value and righteousness of the decision of the ex leader take actions contrary to the ethos of the organization. A lot of times such changes are capable of causing irreversible damages.

2. Organizational Checks

No person should be stronger than the institution itself. Everyone’s should be accountable because when a leader takes decisions, they affect much more than themselves. In some cases extensive powers beyond scrutiny might be necessary, however those circumstances be deemed as the emergencies. Any emergency which aims or tries to last forever crumbles like all its precedents.

Quotes

“Aaj ka kam kal par choronga to aaj bura nahi man jaayega ” ( If I leave today’s work to tomorrow, then today will feel neglected)

“Agar raaste ki chinta karoonga to manzil bura maan jaayegi” ( If I care too much about the road then the Destination will feel neglected)

Jab We Met

This is one movie which I see when I am down and feel like quiting. The energy which the Shahid gets from Kareena helps my mind come out of my blocking spots.

A lot of time things do go bad and we feel frustrated. We feel the world has come crashing on us. The right thing to do is swift action to remove the elements which drag you down.
One should burn and blush the things after learning the requisite lessons from the things which are draining one out of their energy. This learning can be applied on the personal as well as professional level.

Sometimes thinking like a kid without any prejudices and like a clean slate helps you have a perspective which you have not noticed till then. When things get too complicated to handle throw off all conventions and get back to basics.

Quotes

Life mein jo kuch aap sahi mein chahte aapko wahi milta hai [ In your life you only get what you really want]

Accha Accha sochoge to Accha Achha hi Hoga [If you think good and about good things , good things will happen]

Dilwale Dulhaniya Le Jaayenge

This is the movie with the record of being screened for the longest time at a cinema hall in India.  This is a movie I have been watching since my childhood and learning new things every time I see it.. I will here enlist the most touching two lessons in this post …

Lesson 1

Shahrukh Khan after completing his education wants to go on a Europe trip but doesn’t have guts to ask his dad for it because he had failed in the exams.  This was not something to be motivated off but Anupam  Kher’s response and logic behind it was the most interesting part.

Anupam Kher says to Shahrukh Khan that he may go and enjoy his trip and join office later. He tell him that if he has lived his youth then he should go and live his father’s share of youth because he never lived it. He worked all through his youth  to create the business empire. He couldn’t enjoy  those days. But he wanted his son to enjoy those days.

The power of forgiveness and saving enough for future was what made the father’s gesture so compassionate.

Lesson 2

On being advised to elope with the heroine Kajol, shahrukh  gives the following logic given by his mother to him.

In our life several times we have to chose between two roads , one which is correct and other which is not so correct. The correct one is torturous and painful. The not so correct is easy. But in the end the one who takes the tough path is one  who becomes successful.

I found this as the simplest translation of Corporate Boardroom Ethics…

Omkara

Situation: Organizational change involving superseding of some key employees.

Actors: Team leader, expected successor by general perception , unexpected but final successor
Objective: Ensure Smooth Transition

Learnings

The decisions taken by the authorities must take into account fair and fearless opinion of all the stakeholders. It is not possible to please very one all the time. However those who are not pleased, their reasons of unhappiness and possible consequences and repercussions must be thought about beforehand.

Leadership: A leader must not assume his team members to think like him/her.
There are situations that for the good for the organization some decisions like promoting a person lower in rank to supersede a long serving senior have to be taken. In such a scenario the leader must explain the whole scenario to the member who is being superseded. The act of explaining this is not easy to undertake and neither it is easy for the affected person to digest.

Some common issues which can happen :
1) Affected person is unable to understand why or what they can’t do what the supposed junior is believed to be able to do.
2) Insecurity or fear of being sidelined and feeling of the road ends here
3) Grievance that they never got the chance to prove themselves.

Of whatever little understandign I have I beleive following steps must be taken by the leader to ensure smooth transition. Transitions are inevitable in any organization which aspires to survive and be successful . and sometimes need to be rough when an entirely new direction is to be acquired.

1) Leader should try to place themselves in the shoes of the affected parties and see what possible could be felt
2) Seek peer review of possible affects from the peer of concerned people
